This is what is known as a 'false positive' - there is no virus in FM, it is an issue which has occurred with the latest update or AVG.
You need to create and exception for the exe - go to:
Options -> Advanced Settings -> Exceptions -> Add Exception -> Select Exception Type -> Application Or File -> Browse to FM (probably C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Football Manager 2015\fm.exe)
AVG are aware of this thanks to another user and they will remove the false flag in a future update.
If the game will not start, please try the following.
To make sure there’s not been a faulty installation, please verify you game cache.
How To Verify Your Game Cache
- Load Steam
- Click to enter the ‘Library’ section, from here right-click on the game and select ‘Properties’ from the menu.
- Select the Local files tab and click the ‘VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE…’ button.
- Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.
- Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.
- We recommend verifying your cache twice to make sure all files are fully downloaded – no matter how many times you do this, it will always re-download files as it is overwriting the cache. This is perfectly normal.
Once you have verified your cache, try the game again.
If this still does not work, then it could be either an issue related to your graphics card drivers or your anti-virus.
For the graphics card drivers, first of all make sure you are running the latest drivers for your system.
If you're already aware of your graphics card type, the majority of graphics card websites have 'auto-checkers' which can scan your system and find the correct card. They can be found here for the following makes:
AMD/ATI - http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
Intel - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/
Nvidia - http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
Nvidia GeForce - http://www.geforce.com/Drivers
If you have the knowledge, I'd suggest using the manual download and install over the auto-checker, so if you know your exact graphics card make and the OS you are running, please enter in your details and find the latest drivers.
Once you’ve updated to the latest drivers try the game again.
If you are running the game on a laptop, make sure your laptop is running via the mains so it isn't on power saving mode.
Go into your Control Panel and select 'Power Options' - make sure it is running on 'Maximum' or 'High' performance.
If your laptop has an Nvidia card, it will most likely also have a secondary Intel card. Right-click on your desktop and there should be a Nvidia Control Panel. Under "3D settings" and "program settings" add "fm.exe" found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Football Manager 2014 or where you have your program file.
Try the more powerful 'main' Nvidia card to try and run - if it still doesn’t launch, go back and choose "Integrated graphics" as main graphic processor.
If none of the above works, it may be your anti-virus program which is conflicting with the launching the game through Steam. Steam have produced a guide highlighting some programs which may cause problems - https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289
If you think it’s your anti-virus causing the problem and don’t know how to configure it to work, it may be worth you uninstalling the anti-virus program. If you choose to do so, we recommend turning on Windows Firewall/Windows Defender. On OS’s earlier than Windows 8 or 8.1 we’d recommend installing Microsoft Security Essentials which is solid, free and doesn't conflict with Steam or FM. If you run Windows 8 or 8.1 you will already have Windows Defender installed, we would not suggest installing another anti-virus as well as this could also cause conflicting issues.
Once you have setup your anti-virus as above, we’d suggest uninstalling and reinstalling Football Manager. Then try the game again.
If this still doesn’t work, please raise the issue the Sports Interactive Tech Forum found here - http://community.sigames.com/forumdisplay.php/418-Crashes-Game-Launch-and-Technical-Issues
When a game crash dumps when the game starts, there are a few possible reasons as to why this occurs. Below are the most common fixes for this issue.
Make sure you have the latest Net Framework and version of DirectX installed - even if you think you already have, please do the following: To do this, first download and install this net framework update from here - http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9831986
Then download this to make sure your DirectX is up to date (even if you've recently done this, please try again). It is an offline installer so first download it fully. Once downloaded, double-click the exe to run it'll ask a folder location to extract to. Create a folder on your desktop and name it something you'll recognise (say DirectX install). Once it's unzipped into this folder, open the folder and run DXSETUP. This will then run you through the process of installing DirectX
The link to download the latest version of DirectX is here - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
If that still doesn't work, make sure both the game and Steam are not set to run in compatibility mode. To check this, go to the following location:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Football Manager 2015
When you have the FM.exe right-clicking on the shortcut link and go to 'properties'. Within that screen select the 'compatibility' tab and make sure that the compatibility mode is unselected.
Then do the same for the Steam.exe which is located here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam
Bear in mind the file location is dependent on where you've installed Steam, so if you installed it on your D drive, the location will be the same but on D rather than the C drive.
Once that's done, try the game again.
If you still find it's crashing, create a thread on our Technical Forums found here - http://community.sigames.com/forumdisplay.php/443
Also upload your crash dump file to our FTP and let us know the file name. Details on how to find the crash dump and upload it to our FTP can be found here - http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php/405113-FTP-Details
The installation of Steam might be corrupted, please follow the instructions below to manually remove Steam:
- Exit Steam.
- Navigate to your Steam directory. (Typically C:\Program Files\Steam or C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam)
- Delete all of the contents of your Steam directory.
When complete, make sure the Steam registry entries have been removed. While doing the following, please be aware that the Windows registry is a very sensitive part of Windows. Mistakes can render your system unstable so be VERY careful when making any changes.
In the left-hand column of your registry editor, navigate to:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam.
Right-click on Valve, select Delete.
- For 32-bit operating systems:
In the left-hand column of your registry editor, navigate to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\.
Right-click on Valve, select Delete.
- For 64-bit operating systems:
In the left-hand column of your registry editor, navigate to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Valve\.
Right-click on Valve, select Delete.
When completed please close the Registry Editor, restart your computer and try the installation again.
Please re- download Steam from the link below:
If after the above, the issue persists then please refer to the following entry from the Steam Support website regarding updates stalling at a certain percentage:
Shut down Steam and delete this file:
C: -> Program Files -> Steam -> appcache -> appinfo.vdf
We'd very much suggest making sure your .net framework is fully up to date by downloading and installing this - http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9831986
We'd also ask you to update your DirectX to your latest version by downloading and installing this - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
Go to the following location - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Football Manager 2015
When you have the FM.exe right-clicking on the shortcut link and go to 'properties'. Within that screen select the 'compatibility' tab and select compatibility mode (if you're on Windows 7, try the Windows 7 options).
- Go to Steam Library and go to your Football Manger 15 game and "right click"
- Go to Properties
- Go to tab "Local files"
- Go to "Browse Local files"
- Go to the "bin" folder.
- Right click "FM.exe" executable.
- Go to the "Compatibility" tab.
- Look for the privilege level at the bottom and select "Run this program as administrator
If you experience this message when attempting to start the game, configure the compatibility mode for Steam using these steps:
- Close Steam
- Right click on Steam shortcut
- Click "Properties"
- Choose the "Compatibility" tab
- Uncheck the box "Run in Compatibility mode for"
- Click on "OK" and then start Steam using the same shortcut
- You can now try the game
We've found that MSI Afterburner, EVGA Precision and some overclocking tools cause problems with the game. If you uninstall the utility the game should load without any problems.
Bear in mind if you are running on a resolution which is under the minimum resolution of Football Manager 2015 you are not officially supported and the game was not tested under these conditions.
If you are using a Netbook, the minimum resolution requirements for FM2015 (1024 x 768) will not be met, as the screen resolution of your computer is 1024 x 600.
You can boot the game (avoiding the 'game is already running message') by following these steps:
- Open Steam and access your Games Library
- Right-click on Football Manager 2015 -> Properties -> General -> Set Launch Options
- Type this in the box: -small_screen -windowed
- Click on OK, close the window and launch FM15 through Steam
Typically Netbooks offer fewer features compared with Notebooks and Desktop computers; for example, less processing power and reduced ability to run resource-intensive operating systems. Based upon this, you will need to refer to the System Manufacturer to confirm that your computer is designed for resource-intensive games such as Football Manager 2015. SEGA and SI do not offer support for this game on Netbooks.
Please bear in mind Football Manager 2015 is not officially supported with this operating system. However if you put the game into compatibility mode, you should be able to launch the game without issues. You can do this by right-clicking on the exe found in your Steam folder which by default installs here - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Football Manager 2015
First of all manually uninstall anything Graphics Card related (Intel, nVidia and AMD) using Windows Control Panel -> Program and Features.
Once uninstalled, restart your system then install the latest drivers, making sure the latest version was successfully installed. These drivers can be found via the Graphics Card Drivers website:
Once this is done, check your system manufacturers’ website to make sure you have all the latest drivers available for your system. Once this process is complete, use Windows Update to check and make sure there are no outstanding updates available for your system.
Then try to run the game. If you're still having issues please create a thread within the PC Issues forum located here - http://community.sigames.com/forumdisplay.php/462-Issues-Found-on-PC
