(If you're on a Mac, please read THIS thread instead for assistance)

If you receive a crash dump on game launch, please bear in mind a crash dump is the generic response for any type of crash – deleting the crash dump file will not help. There are a few troubleshooting techniques we suggest you undertake in order to get the game running.

Normally a crash dump on game start is related to a system or conflicting error, so we suggest the following steps to be completed in the following order:

- Make sure your Graphics Card drivers and installed and fully up to date

- If running on a laptop with dual graphics cards, make sure they are configured for the correct card to run with FM

- Make sure your Anti-Virus isn’t interfering with Steam or FM as this can cause problems when installing or launching the game

- Make sure your Windows Updates, DirectX and Net Framework are installed and up to date

If you have completed all of the above without being able to resolve your issue, please create a thread within our technical issues/crashes PC sub forum which can be found here - https://community.sigames.com/forum/513-crashes-and-technical-issues-on-pc/

Please include as many details as possible and list any troubleshooting techniques you’ve tried already so they can help you in the most efficient way.

If you launch the game and find it’s stuck on the loading screen, there are a few troubleshooting steps we suggest undertaking in order to get it to work.

First of all, remove any Workshop files like custom graphics and logos you may have added in preparation of launching the game. This can occasionally interfere or slowdown the game when launching.

Once you’ve done this, we would suggest deleting your cache and preferences, then reverifying the game cache via Steam. Details on how to do this below:

Delete Cache

Delete Preference

Reverify Cache

Once you’ve completed all those steps above in the order listed, please then try relaunching the game (still without any added Workshop or custom files) and see if it now processes past the loading screen. If it does load without issue now and you were trying to add custom files, please close your game down and re-add any custom files to see if the issue is now fully resolved.

If you have completed all of the above without being able to resolve your issue, please create a thread within our technical issues/crashes PC sub forum which can be found here - https://community.sigames.com/forum/513-crashes-and-technical-issues-on-pc/

If this still hasn’t resolved the issue, it could well be an overheating issue, especially if the problem occurred whilst playing a 3D match. To determine whether this is the case, first of all try and clear out all the vents and make sure the fans are working on your system.

We would then suggest running a program to monitor your system temperature whilst the game is open. An example of a program that performs this function is SpeedFan. Please bear in mind that this application was not developed by Sports Interactive or Sega and we provide no support or guarantee regarding its use. Please proceed at your risk.

If you switch the game to ‘Windowed’ mode via the in-game preferences you will be able to monitor your temperature whilst running the game. If anything runs at 90c or above you may well have an internal issue with your machine and we would recommend consulting an IT professional.

If your system temperature is fine, we would recommend checking your Graphics Card for errors with a stability test. An example of a program that performs this function is the FurMark Burn-In Test. Again please bear in mind that this application was not developed by Sports Interactive or Sega and we provide no support or guarantee regarding its use. Please proceed at your risk.

If you can run this test without issue for 15 minutes then the issue is unlikely to be directly related to the graphics card.

Go to the following location - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Football Manager 2017

On Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

- When you have the FM.exe right-clicking on the shortcut link and go to 'properties'.

- Within that screen select the 'compatibility' tab and select compatibility mode by selecting the checkbox.

- Select the system you’re running on to (i.e. on Windows 7 select Windows 7).

On Windows 10

If you’re on Windows 10, right click on the FM shortcut link and select ‘Troubleshoot compatibility’

If you experience this message when attempting to start the game, configure the compatibility mode for Steam using these steps:

On Windows Vista, 7 and 8.1

- Close Steam

- Right click on Steam shortcut

- Click "Properties"

- Choose the "Compatibility" tab

- Uncheck the box "Run in Compatibility mode for"

- Click on "OK" and then start Steam using the same shortcut

- You can now try the game

On Windows 10

- Close Steam

- Right click on Steam shortcut

- Select ‘Troubleshoot compatibility’

- Following It attempting to Troubleshoot, select ‘Try recommended settings’

- You can now try the game

Problems with Launching the game:

First of all manually uninstall anything Graphics Card related (Intel, nVidia and AMD) using Windows Control Panel -> Program and Features.

Once uninstalled, restart your system then install the latest drivers, making sure the latest version was successfully installed. These drivers can be found via the Graphics Card Drivers website:

Intel – https://downloadcenter.intel.com

Nvidia – http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

AMD - http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Once this is done, check your system manufacturers’ website to make sure you have the latest drivers available for your system.

Once this process is complete, use Windows Update to check and make sure there are no outstanding updates available for your system.

Then try to run the game. If you're still having issues please raise a support ticket with Sega by contacting them at help@sega.co.uk.

Problems with Saving the game

If you already have a save game, can you try right clicking your save file, and click properties.

Then see if there is an 'unblock' button. If so, please click it, then click OK and try loading the save. Once you've done this, go to FM -> Save As and save the game with a different file name to see if it will save correctly.

If not, can you go to the security tab, then click Edit, click on your username in the list, and in the bottom area select 'Full Control', the OK and OK again.

We also recommend doing this for the save games folder. Again right-click on the folder and go to 'Properties' and make the above changes to the security tab. Then try loading the save and again go to FM -> Save As and save the game with a different file name to see if it will save correctly.

Then try to run the game. If you're still having issues please create a thread within our technical issues/crashes PC sub forum which can be found here - https://community.sigames.com/forum/513-crashes-and-technical-issues-on-pc/

Please include as many details as possible and list any troubleshooting techniques you’ve tried already so they can help you in the most efficient way.

If you’ve encountered a message which states ‘An error has occurred while installing Football Manager 17 (missing app configuration)' when attempting to install Football Manager 2017, please shut down Steam and delete this file located at the following location:

C:\Program Files\Steam\appcache\appinfo.vdf

Once you’ve completed this, launch Steam and attempt to reinstall and run the game.

This is most likely due to the game encountering an incomplete install or update.

To combat this, please verify your Steam cache. This can be done by following the instructions below:

Verify Game Cache:

- Load Steam

- From the 'Library' section, right-click on the game and select 'Properties' from the menu.

- Select the 'Local Files' tab and click the 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache' button.

- Steam will verify the game's files

- this process may take several minutes. This will always download a number of files even if you've just verified the game.

- Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.

- We recommend verifying your cache twice to make sure all files are fully downloaded.

If you receive an error message stating that ‘Steam is already’ running, please read the troubleshooting techniques below to resolve the issue.

First of all, please see this 'Steam is already running' topic for instructions - https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8787-wyil-1543

Sometimes, if you launch the game too quickly after shutting it down, or get impatient after double-clicking the shortcut, you can get this when your system senses the game is running in two instances. If this is the case, do the following:

- Right-click on your Windows Taskbar (normally found at the bottom)

- Click on 'Task Manager'

- Go to the tab 'Processes'

- Sort alphabetically by clicking 'Image Name'

- Find fm.exe *32

- Click so it's selected, then click the 'End Process' button in the bottom-right hand corner

- Do this for any fm.exe *32 instance

- Once this is done, close the Taskbar and launch the game normally - be patient when it attempts to load

If your system shut down or crashed mid-save then the file will be corrupted and cannot be fixed.

Likewise if you game has been force closed for any reason there is a chance of save game corruption.

The only opportunity to get the save back is to try and use Windows ‘Restore Previous Versions’ function. This will not always be on by default so may only work for some users.

To use this functionality, first go into your 'Documents' folder. Within there should be a Sports Interactive Folder.

Go into the Football Manager 2017 folder. Go into 'games' and right click on your save which no longer loads. In the menu that opens is an option called 'Restore Previous Versions', click that and see if it works. It'll first scan for a previous version then potentially give you the option to 'Restore'.

To make sure you don't have an issue like this again, we'd very much recommend going into your in-game preferences when you load up FM and turn on 'New File for Every Auto Save' option under the auto saves. We'd also suggest turning it on onto weekly or fortnightly so you always have a recent back up in case of any problems.

- Go to ‘Start’ > ‘Control Panel’ > ‘System’ > ‘Advanced’ > ‘Performance’ > ‘Data Execution Prevention’.

- Select ‘Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select’.

- Select ‘Add’, navigate to C:\Program Files\Steam (or your default Steam directory), and add Steam.exe to the exception list.

Additionally, you will need to add the FM.exe using the same process as above

The FM.exe file can be located here by default - C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Football Manager 2017

If you start the game and find you’re having issues being able to click buttons, please try the following troubleshooting techniques to resolve the problem:

If this still does not resolve the issue, please try changing the game from GPU Rendering Mode to Software Rendering mode.

You can change this when first launching the game on the splash screens by pressing and briefly holding: ALT + SHIFT + F10 all at the same time.

If you’re still encountering issues, please raise a support ticket with Sega by contacting them at help@sega.co.uk. Please include as many details as possible and list any troubleshooting techniques you’ve tried already so they can help you in the most efficient way.

If your game appears to be running slowly, we suggest the following troubleshooting techniques listed below:

First remove any custom logos/graphics/skins etc to see if that resolves the issue. If it doesn't, try the following below in the order listed:

Make sure your Anti-Virus isn’t interfering with Steam or FM as this can cause problems with the speed of the game

If after doing the troubleshooting listed above you’re still encountering issues please create a thread within our technical issues/crashes PC sub forum which can be found here - https://community.sigames.com/forum/513-crashes-and-technical-issues-on-pc/

Please include as many details as possible and list any troubleshooting techniques you’ve tried already so they can help you in the most efficient way.

If you receive a message on game launch that ‘fm.exe contains a virus’, this is a false-positive by the anti-virus program and can be ignored. You may want to update your virus definition software which may help, but until the anti-virus software developers update their software you may encounter this message.

There is no virus contained within the FM.exe.

If you are unable to launch the game because of this message, go into your Anti-Virus program and add the FM.exe to your exceptions. If you are unsure how to do this, consult your anti-virus program’s website for detailed instructions.

Bear in mind if you are running on a resolution which is under the minimum resolution of Football Manager 2017 you are not officially supported and the game was not tested under these conditions.

For example, if you are using a Netbook, the minimum resolution requirements for FM2017 (1024 x 768) will not be met, as the screen resolution of your computer is 1024 x 600.

You can boot the game (avoiding the 'game is already running message') by following these steps:

- Open Steam and access your Games Library

- Right-click on Football Manager 2017 -> Properties -> General -> Set Launch Options

- Type this in the box: -small_screen -windowed

- Click on OK, close the window and launch FM17 through Steam

Typically Netbooks offer fewer features compared with Notebooks and Desktop computers; for example, less processing power and reduced ability to run resource-intensive operating systems. Based upon this, you will need to refer to the System Manufacturer to confirm that your computer is designed for resource-intensive games such as Football Manager 2017. SEGA and SI do not offer support for this game on Netbooks.

- Make sure that Steam is connected and running Online, and not in Offline mode.

- Click on ‘Steam’ from the header and select ‘Settings’

From the ‘Cloud’ tab make sure ‘Enable SteamCloud synchronization for application which support it’ is ticked

If you receive an XML error message upon launching the game, we would suggest completing the following troubleshooting steps:

First of all, make sure the game is closed before you proceed.

For Windows Vista and Windows 7:

- Click ‘Start’

- Select ‘Computer’

- From the header, select ‘Organize’ dropdown

- Select ‘Folder and Search Options’

- Within here, select the ‘View’ tab and make sure ‘Show Hidden Files and Folders’ is selected

- Navigate to C:\Users\[Your Windows Username]\AppData\Local\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2017

- Delete the Cache and Preferences folder

For Windows 8 and Windows 10:

- Click ‘File Explorer’ from within the taskbar (or click ‘Desktop/Start’ then type in ‘File Explorer’)

- On the header click ‘View’ and make sure above ‘Show/hide’ that ‘Hidden Items’ is ticked

- Navigate to C:\Users\[Your Windows Username]\AppData\Local\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2017

- Delete the Cache and Preferences folder

Once you have completed these steps, launch the game.

If you receive a black flashing screen when the game launches, please try the troubleshooting steps below to resolve your issue. We are aware there are some programs causing problems when Football Manager 2017 launches. We should suggest if you have any of the following installed to remove them and try the game again:

- Toshiba DisplayLink

- Raptr Desktop App

- MSI Afterburner

- EVGA Precision

If you have completed all of the above without being able to resolve your issue, please create a thread within our technical issues/crashes PC sub forum which can be found here:

- Delete this file

- Launch the game
